Schedule:

8:00am - 8:30am Contestant Sign-ins

8:30am - 8:50am Contestant Meeting

9:00am Contest starts: All contestants will be given a booth assignment and then directed into the shop. If a contestant is accompanied by an instructor, the instructor will be asked to stay outside of the weld shop.

Time includes machine set-up and amperage adjustment, scrap metal will be provided.

Clothing and Tool Requirement:

Contestants must wear:

Long Pants, work boots (no gym type shoe), long sleeve shirt, welding jacket or sleeves, Kromer type head protection, welding gloves, safety glasses and if wearing prescription glasses they must have side shields.

Contestants must provide their own:

Welding hood, chipping hammer, welding gloves, safety glasses, side shields, pliers or channel locks

Material that will be provided:
Stinger (electrode holder), ear plugs, welding electrodes and materials to be welded (plate etc.) as well as a wire brush, saw blade and a chisel. Power tools will not be allowed.

CONTESTANTS MUST WEAR THEIR PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT WHILE IN THE WELD SHOP


Contest Guidelines:

These guidelines will be followed during this contest:

  1. Contestants will receive a number at registration, that number will correspond with the pre-stamped project to avoid confusion.
  2. Contestants must wear their personal protective equipment at all times while in the weld shop.
  3. Each contestant will be given a 30 minute time limit on their project. All contestants will start and end at the same time.
  4. Points will be based on equal leg size, good fusion and penetration of base metal, no porosity or slag inclusions, uniform bead appearance, minimum distortion and full and complete welds at the ends.
  5. A drawing will be provided with the joint detail.
  6. The contestant may not quench the project or remove it from their welding booth for any reason. Once complete, a judge or contest official will remove the project for the contestant.
  7. The contestant must demonstrate correct safety practices at all times.
  8. While the contest is in progress, there shall be no communication between the contestants or between a contestant and his/her instructor, except as directed by a judge or contest official.
  9. All welding projects shall be left in the as-welded condition; there shall be no filing along the toes of the weld, chisel marks or chipping hammer marks. Scrap the slag off and wire brush the area.
