Quality Control

Local Union 597 offers a wide variety of Quality Assurance / Quality Control courses.  ASME, CWI, NDE are just three of the courses offered.  If you have any questions you may contact the Training Center or via e-mail at training@pftf597.org.

QC/CWI

Quality control is an important aspect of any construction project.  Owners rely on Local 597 to provide certified and qualified quality control inspectors.  The demand for these inspectors continues to rise.  Owners today are requiring a higher level of certification and training than they have required in the past.  The American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification is the most widely recognized and respected certification of its kind. Becoming a CWI means more than passing a certification test.  Owners and contractors are looking for individuals who demonstrate a high degree of understanding, experience, integrity, and work ethic.  This course will introduce you to what will be expected of you when you become a CWI.  It will help you learn valuable skills that will ensure your success as an inspector.  It will also prepare you for the CWI exam.

This course meets one night per week from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM and runs 16 weeks.

Must show five years of work experience that can be verified by the Business Manager of Local Union 597.

Upon completion, there will be a 6-consecutive day UA regional course test prep/study course prior to taking the CWI exam.

BOOKS WILL BE PURCHASED BY THE STUDENT AND NOT PROVIDED BY THE TRAINING CENTER

ASME

Increase your skills and your marketability by adding endorsements to your CWI certification.  This course will teach you how to navigate standards, specifications, and codebooks. Learning how to navigate these documents is critical to becoming a more effective inspector. Course training will be based on ASME Section IX, ASME B31.1, and ASME B31.3, the three most common standards used by owners.   Since most standards, specifications, and codebooks are formatted similarly, you will acquire the knowledge required to take other endorsements offered by the American Welding Society (AWS).  Taking this course and acquiring the ASME Section IX/B31.1/B31.3 endorsement currently meets the requirements for the CWI 9-year recertification.

All ASME endorsement testing will be done at Prometric test sites.

NDE

Non-destructive examination (NDE) is a key part of any quality control program.  Quality Control Managers are looking for inspectors who have a comprehensive understanding of NDE logistics and processes.  This course will introduce you to the most common types of NDE you will encounter.  It will explain the theory, application, and logistics of the most common processes.  You will also learn trade terminology, how to review NDE reports, and the basics of radiographic film interpretation.
